“Aren’t you supposed to be healthy?” one of my gracious Wyoming hosts asked me as I crushed a brownie topped with Justin’s Honey Peanut Butter. It was noon. I replied, “I let it all go on vacation.”
Upon reflection, this scene is a decent representation for how I currently live (at least w/r/t diet). I have totally given up self-discipline such that when I leave my carefully crafted home environment, I throw cuisine caution to the wind.
This system has worked well recently because I live alone and haven’t left the nest much (barring this past trip). Realistically this system is not sustainable (I plan to get married and cohabitate), and it allows my discipline muscle to atrophy.
My next step might be to write out eating principles that apply to all situations and environments, and then actually attempt to follow them even when temptations abound.
*Side note: if you are trying to change your diet (or almost anything) it is so much easier to change your environment than to try and impose strict self-discipline. This idea was popularized in James Clear’s Atomic Habits, and I have found it to be true in my personal experience. For example, if you want to change your diet – remove everything you don’t want to regularly consume from your home.
