I started listening to YC’s How to start a startup podcast yesterday (thanks PS for the rec), and Paul Graham made some interesting points regarding co-founders.
- The co-founder relationship is the most important in the company, but many co-founders approach it very casually. Ironically they often spend tons of time vetting their first couple of employees, even though they skipped this process with their co-founder.
- 2-3 co-founders is ideal, 4 is workable, and 5 is a mess (I know that some research suggests 4 is optimal).
- Working as a solo founder is better than working in a shitty co-founder setup, but clearly not as a good as having co-founders. I think he mentioned the top 20 most valuable YC companies all had multiple founders.
Where to find co-founders:
- college friends
- grad school friends
- life friends
- co-workers
- YC founder matching program
- I have met some interesting people so far, but obviously nothing has clicked. I’m meeting a guy for a follow-up next week. At the very least the program has been a positive networking experience.
- Startup events
