Choosing where to live

My apartment lease expires at the end of March and I’m not sure where I’m going to live after that. I used my beach walk this morning (#islandlife) as an opportunity to think about where I should go, and more importantly, to think about thinking about where I should go.

The framework I drafted boiled down to 4 metrics. I should note that I don’t think this is how everyone should approach this question – I am only thinking about my current situation. The metrics:

  • Physical environment: cleanliness, weather, proximity to nature, safety
  • Proximity to loved ones: I’m not planning to settle down in my next destination, so my assumption (for this exercise) is that I won’t add new people to this category when I travel (though of course I want to)
  • Proximity to people who make me better: Is there an existing entrepreneurial community? This metric is less important as digital communication provides a decent (although not comprehensive) substitute
  • Cost: I don’t want to run out of money and be forced back into the job market, so I would like to lower my cash burn (from its current high NYC level)

More to come regarding the actual list of places, but I don’t have time for part 2 now as I need to get to the beach!
