Scratch your own itch. You are your first customer. Build things people want.
I realized last night that I never fully grasped the startup adages related to solving your own problems, or at least being intimately familiar with the given problem.
My entrepreneurial focus is weight loss. I’ve never once had to deal with weight issues (ok I put on some pounds during my semester in Hong Kong, but that shit melted off in a couple of weeks upon my return). Anyway I just blatantly don’t know nor truly understand my customers. I thought research and conversations via Reddit was enough…it was not.
But I think there is a way through. If you build it, they will come. If you provide valuable content, they will read (and give you their email).
I’m finishing up my revised business strategy document, but my new strategy is focused on writing clear, concise, and actionable weight loss blogs and then sharing those posts (or nuggets from them) across platforms in an attempt to gather a handful of engaged readers. I will then interact with those readers (via comments, email, and eventually phone calls) to better KNOW THY CUSTOMER and begin to triangulate where exactly this business opportunity exists. The plan is a bit more detailed, but this is the gist.
Write first, build later.
