Choosing a Business Idea

As mentioned in my previous post, I’ve spent some time researching nutrition as it relates to weight loss and body fat reduction. I came to the conclusion that low-carb diets tend to be the most effective and sustainable approach to losing weight, but it also became clear that nutrition is unique to every individual such that the most important thing is to figure out what works for them. Most mainstream diets seem to support weight loss if the user rigorously adheres to the given diet. This concept (and brainstorming by some family members) led me to build thedietselector.com.

Thedietselector.com takes a person’s dietary lifestyle preferences (for example, how quickly they want to lose weight, or if they’re willing to give up certain food groups), and then uses a simple algorithm to select an existing diet that best fit that person’s lifestyle (for example, Weight Watchers, Atkins, Pegan, etc). Check it out!

Is this a business? Doubtful. My goal with this website is to better understand the potential customer and his/her problems. If people do find this tool useful then there are several different directions I could take this thing:

  • I could create pdf guides to following some of the diets and try to sell them for maybe $10 or $20 per download
  • I could attempt to grow the pageviews for the site (probably via adding a blog with the goal of boosting the website in search engine results), and ultimately look to sell advertisements
  • I could build complementary features that users would pay to access – such as a similar tool for workouts, or a website/app that helps you stick to your chosen diet

My plan now is to start grinding for page views, so that I can start generating some user feedback. I’m going to try to spread the word via friends/family, Indie Hackers, reddit, and maybe Product Hunt. If you have any ideas/comments/concerns send them my way!
