I have boatloads of free time right now, so I figured I should try to think about how to spend that time. “Spend” seems like the correct verb as I will never get any of my time back. In theory my 2021 goals should dictate my time allocation, but in hindsight I never really thought about the principles that should have driven my goal selection. Alas.
Underlying premise: life is a game and the goal is to maximize points scored.
So how do I score points?
- Spending time with people I love and/or respect. This can be satisfied with family/friends as well as communities/teams.
- Engaging in activities that I love and/or give me satisfaction – presumably there is a proper balance when it comes to instant vs. delayed gratification.
- Growth and exploration – overcoming challenges and leaving my comfort zone.
- Helping others.
- Maintaining/improving my health.
I’m sure this framework can be improved – suggestions welcome. Regardless, the question becomes what is the best strategy to maximize my life points scored? Answer (open to revision): maximize time spent doing activities that combine multiple categories.
A brainstorm of activities that combine multiple categories:
- Have a family and raise children
- Build a business or organization that provides a product/service which helps others. Do this with a team that I respect (and love?)
- Do community service with family/friends
- Ski or hike challenging terrain with family/friends
- Do challenging exercise with family/friends
- Join communities where members actively help and support each other. Some ideas for myself:
- CrossFit, startups, programming, community service, book club?, martial arts?, skiing/hiking?, investing?
I bolded the first 2 bullets because I think those activities will provide the most life points…maybe I should get more serious about dating 😭😭.
Anyways, ramble concluded.
