The Road Trip – Expectations

“Driving that train
High on cocaine
Casey Jones you better
Watch your speed
Trouble ahead
Trouble behind
And you know that notion
Just crossed my mind?” – the Grateful Dead

Tomorrow Brendan (an alias at his request) and I wake up at 6am to set off on our ~32 hour drive from New York City to Park City, UT. We plan to stop in Chicago, either Omaha or Cheyenne (timing dependent), and then Jackson, WY for a couple of nights before arriving in Park City. When the alarm blares tomorrow morning both our road trip and my nomad life officially begin. Thus I think it appropriate to publish my expectations pre-road trip such that I and my loyal readers (hi mom and dad!) can run an honest post-mortem on predictions vs. reality.

My expectations for our road trip:

  • Casey Jones by the Grateful Dead gets >2 hours of play time (Brendan loves the Grateful Dead)
  • We do parking lot yoga during multiple stops to stay loose
  • We eat delicious, grass-fed steaks in Omaha
  • We don’t contract Covid
  • We trade some GDX and GLD as our conversation inevitably drifts toward the long-term erosion of the US Dollar
  • We facetime multiple college friends
  • Brendan and I are still happy with our decision to live together in Park City at the end of the drive
  • We discover that masks aren’t really worn in certain parts of the country
  • At least one of us experiences leg cramps
  • The car doesn’t break down
  • I actually publish this blog (the draft was written the night before departure)

My 11th grade high school history teacher Dr. Buckley used to implore that we, “Go west, with a dog, a pickup truck, and a good book.” I have a bearded co-pilot, a 2011 Ford Escape, and a kindle. Not quite the same, but I feel my spirit of adventure starting to brew. I can’t wait to see what this drive and this year hold in store.
